A useful first step
Your first event.
A little less unknown.
A practical way to choose a gathering, introduce yourself and follow up without turning every conversation into a sales pitch.
Choose one gathering you can actually attend.
Begin with the purpose and format, then check the date, venue, admission and visitor requirements. A speaker-led breakfast gives you a shared topic; an informal mixer gives you more freedom to move between conversations.
An event labeled members-only is different from an open gathering. If the listing does not confirm visitor eligibility, ask the host before you go. You do not need to join every group to learn which format suits you.
Prepare an introduction, not a presentation.
Try a short version of your name, the work you do and the kind of problem you help with. Leave enough space for the other person to respond. If you are exploring a new direction, it is fine to say that.
- Bring a way to share contact information if the other person wants it.
- Have two questions ready, such as what brought them to the event or what they are working on.
- Check the arrival instructions and give yourself time to find the room.
Make it easy for someone to talk with you.
Ask a question, listen to the answer and follow the part that interests you. You do not need to turn every introduction into a pitch. If a conversation reaches a natural pause, thank the person and make room for another introduction.
If you arrive alone, ask the host how first-time visitors usually get started. A small introduction from the organizer can make the room feel much more familiar.
Follow up on something specific.
Before exchanging details, ask whether the other person would like to continue the conversation. Afterward, mention something you discussed and the next step you agreed on. A relevant, personal note is more useful than adding everyone to a mailing list.
Think about whether you would enjoy returning. One productive conversation, a better understanding of the community or a useful introduction can make an event worthwhile.
The next step is yours
